When we look at cat breeds, we're looking at groups of cats selected over many generations to highlight certain qualities. This selection has created patterns in their DNA that affect everything from how their fur looks to how they behave with people and other cats.

Studies show that different breeds tend to have different personality patterns across several areas, including how fearful they are, how active and playful they tend to be, how they interact with people, how they get along with other cats, grooming habits and litter tray behaviour.

Russian Blues were often found to be cautious and shy, Abyssinians bold and confident, and Bengals the most energetic and playful of all. Cat lovers have noticed these patterns for years, and owner questionnaires suggest there's something to them...
