Have you ever wondered why your Bengal can't resist climbing to the highest point in your home, while your friend's Ragdoll is content lounging on the sofa? Or why Persian cats tend to be more reserved with strangers than the outgoing Siamese? The answer lies in their DNA, the genetic code that makes each cat who they are.
Just as your cat's genes decide whether they have long or short fur, or green eyes or blue, they also help shape their personality. Scientists have discovered how a cat's breed background influences both looks and behaviour. Every cat is an individual with their own quirks (ask any owner with two cats of the same breed!). Still, knowing the inherited tendencies of different breeds helps us appreciate what makes our cats tick.
The Genetic Blueprint of Cat Personalities

When we look at cat breeds, we're looking at groups of cats selected over many generations to highlight certain qualities. This selection has created patterns in their DNA that affect everything from how their fur looks to how they behave with people and other cats.
Studies show that different breeds tend to have different personality patterns across several areas, including how fearful they are, how active and playful they tend to be, how they interact with people, how they get along with other cats, grooming habits and litter tray behaviour.
